Matthew 5:3-12 – Our Spiritual Journey

  1. ADMIT YOUR SPIRITUAL POVERTY.

Vs. 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” – Recognize you are a helpless sinner whose “righteousness is filthy rags.” (Isaiah 64:6) “There is none righteous, no, not one.” (Romans 3:10)

2. MOURN OVER YOUR SINS.

Vs. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” – “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23).  Repent. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

3. HUMBLE YOURSELF BEFORE GOD.

Vs. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” – “Humble thyself in the sight of the Lord.” (James 4:10) “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

4. HUNGER TO KNOW HIM.

Vs. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” – Hunger to know Him and His Word “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby…” (1 Peter 2:2) “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

5. BE MERCIFUL TO OTHERS AS JESUS HAS BEEN MERCIFUL TO YOU.

Vs. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” – “And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12) “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.” (Mark 11:25) “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.” (Colossians 3:12-13)

6. LET YOUR HEART BE TRANSFORMED.

Vs. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” – “A broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise.” (Psalm 51:17) “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2)

7. LIVE AT PEACE AS A CHILD OF GOD.

Vs. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God.” – As a child of God, exhibit the peace Christ gives you.  “Peace I leave you, My peace I give to you, not as the world gives do I give to You.” (John 14:27) “Behold what manner of love the Father has given unto us, that we should be called the sons of God.” (1 John 3:1) “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” (Romans 12:18) “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2)

8. EXPECT SOME PEOPLE TO HATE YOU FOR YOUR LIFE IN CHRIST.

Vs. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Read John 15:18-21 “If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.) (John 15:20)

9. LIVE IN LIGHT OF ETERNITY, NOT THIS PRESENT LIFE.

Vs. 11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.  Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Receive your heavenly reward: “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” (Matthew 25:21) “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested ten days.  Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10)
